You can’t control the temperature of your home without a thermostat. It’s an essential part of all residential heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) systems.
The thermostat serves as an interface for your HVAC system. You can adjust the temperature on the thermostat, after which your HVAC system will run until it achieves that temperature.
While all thermostats support temperature adjustments, they are available in different types.
#1) Manual Thermostats
Manual thermostats are those that require manual temperature adjustments. Also known as mechanical thermostats, they are the oldest and most basic type.
They typically feature a temperature dial. Turning the dial in one direction will raise the temperature. Turning the dial in the opposite direction will lower the temperature.
#2) Programmable Thermostats
Programmable thermostats support heating and cooling schedules. They feature a digital interface that, as the name suggests, supports programming. You can program a programmable thermostat to run your AC system or furnace at different times of the day.
Even if you are away, the programmable thermostat will execute these programmed commands.
#3) Smart Thermostats
In recent years, smart thermostats have become increasingly popular. Smart thermostats work by making temperature adjustments automatically.
Like programmable thermostats, they have a digital interface, and you can typically program them to run the AC system or furnace at different times of the day. But smart thermostats can also adjust the temperature of your home automatically.
#4) Wi-Fi Thermostats
There are also Wi-Fi thermostats. Wi-Fi thermostats have a built-in network card that allows them to connect to a nearby wireless network, such as your home’s wireless network.
Wi-Fi thermostats offer an unparalleled level of convenience. You won’t have to wait until you get home to turn on the AC system or furnace.
Once connected, you can access the Wi-Fi thermostat from your smartphone. If you’re about to drive home during the summer, for instance, you can turn on the AC system from your smartphone.
As long as you have a smartphone, you can log in to the Wi-Fi thermostat to make the necessary temperature adjustments. By the time you arrive, your home will already be cool or warm.
#5) Low-Voltage Thermostats
Low-voltage thermostats are those that consume less electricity than other types of thermostats, specifically line-voltage thermostats.
Most low-voltage thermostats run at 24V. In comparison, other types of thermostats run at 120 to 240V.
If your home has a traditional low-voltage system, you might consider choosing a low-voltage thermostat.
