5 Important Reasons to Keep Your Air Ducts Clean

August 11, 2020 by Mike McFadden - A/C & Heating Specialist
Dirty Air Ducts

All heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems contain air ducts. Consisting of hollow tubes made of galvanized metal – typically steel or aluminum – they guide conditioned air to the supply vents.

After being cooled or warmed at the evaporator coil, the conditioned air is blown through the ducts before exiting out your home’s supply vents. Air ducts can accumulate dust and debris, however.

While some homeowners ignore them, you should keep your air ducts clean for the following reasons.

#1) Even Air Distribution

Keeping your air ducts will ensure the even distribution of conditioned air.

The presence of dust and debris can obstruct airflow. Depending on where the dust or debris is located exactly, air may flow out of some return vents but not others.

As a result, only the rooms with the unobstructed return vents will receive the conditioned air.

#2) Longer Lasting Air Filters

Air filters tend to last longer when used in HVAC systems with clean air ducts rather than their counterparts with dirty air ducts.

After all, if your air ducts are clean, less dust and debris will reach the filter. Air filters have a finite lifespan. Once a filter is clogged to the point where airflow is restricted, it must be replaced.

With clean air ducts, your air filters will last longer.

#3) Better Heating and Cooling

Your HVAC system will provide better heating and cooling with clean air ducts.

With little or no debris inside the air ducts, your HVAC system’s evaporator coil will remain clean. A clean evaporator coil, of course, is essential to both heating and cooling operations. If it’s covered in dust and debris, it will release less thermal energy.

#4) Lower Energy Costs

Clean air ducts promote lower energy costs.

According to Energy Star, 25% to 40% of a typical home’s heating and cooling energy is wasted.

Dirty air ducts can contribute to wasted energy by making your HVAC system less efficient.

To lower your home’s energy costs, you need to keep your air ducts clean.

#5) Improves Air Quality

The quality of air inside your home is affected by the level of airborne pollutants.

If your air ducts are dirty, the air quality will be low. Conversely, clean air ducts promote high-quality air. The air inside your home will be cleaner with less dust, dirt, mold, and other pollutants that you probably don’t want to breathe in.
