Your heating, ventilation and cooling system’s (HVAC’s) air filter won’t last forever.
As it traps dirt and debris, it will become congested while simultaneously restricting airflow through the ductwork.
While replacing the air filter sounds like a simple enough task, there are several mistakes you should avoid making.
#1) Choosing the Wrong Size
You’ll need to choose a new air filter in the correct size.
Different HVAC systems require air filters in different sizes. Fortunately, you can find the correct size by inspecting the old air filter. You should see three numbers on the side of the old filter, indicating its height, width, and depth.
When shopping for a new air filter, make sure it uses this same size.
#2) Overlooking MERV Rating
Don’t forget to check the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating when choosing a new air filter.
The MERV rating is a representation of how effectively an air filter can remove small particles from the air. The higher an air filter’s MERV rating, the more effective it is at removing small particles.
#3) Installing in the Wrong Direction
Another mistake to avoid when replacing the air filter is installing it in the wrong direction.
Air filters are designed for use in a specific direction. When installing the new air filter in your furnace or Air Handling Unit (AHU), you’ll need to use the right direction.
Most air filters have an arrow on the side. This arrow represents the direction of the airflow, thus allowing you to use the right direction.
#4) Not Pushing In All the Way
Make sure the new air filter is pushed in all the way.
If you only push the new filter partially into your furnace or AHU, it won’t be able to perform its function. Some of the air may simply travel around the new filter rather than through it.
As a result, dust and debris will accumulate inside the ductwork.
#5) Not Replacing Frequently Enough
Failure to replace the air filter frequently enough is another mistake you should avoid.
Air filters require frequent changing. At a minimum, you should replace the air filter once every three months. If you have a pet – or if someone in your home suffers from allergies – you may want to replace it every one or two months.
Replacing it less frequently will lead to higher levels of airborne pollutants while also degrading your HVAC system’s performance.
