The speed at which air circulates throughout your home can affect your comfort during the summer.
If your home suffers from poor air circulation, it may feel uncomfortably hot. Rather than circulating throughout your home, the cool air produced by your AC system will remain stagnant.
You can improve air circulation in your home, however, in the five following ways.
#1) Keep Vents Open and Unobstructed
Closed or obstructed vents can restrict air from circulating throughout your home.
Traditional split-system AC systems have two types of vents: supply and return. Supply vents propel cool air into your home, whereas return vents draw in warm air so that it can be cooled.
For better air circulation, make sure all of your home’s supply and return vents are open and unobstructed.
#2) Turn on Ceiling Fans
You can turn on ceiling fans to improve air circulation in your home.
Ceiling fans, of course, don’t create cool air, but they do improve circulation. With a ceiling fan turned on, air will move more quickly throughout your home to discourage the formation of “hot spots.”
#3) Use the Right-Sized AC System
Don’t underestimate the importance of using the right-sized AC system.
If your AC system is too big, it may lead to circulation problems due to short cycling. AC systems only circulate air when they are running. With an excessively large AC system, it will cut off more frequently, at which point it will no longer propel or draw in air through the vents.
#4) Change the Filter
Another way to improve air circulation in your home is to change the filter.
AC systems use filters to remove debris, dust, germs, and other contaminants from the air. The return vents draw in air that passes through a filter where it’s cleaned.
Air filters don’t last forever, though. Over time, they’ll collect debris that restricts airflow and, therefore, promotes poor air circulation in your home.
Thankfully, changing the air filter is a quick fix that only takes a few minutes.
#5) Add an Attic Vent
If your home still suffers from poor circulation, you may want to install an attic vent.
Because of the way in which heat rises, an unventilated attic can negatively affect your AC system’s performance. The hot air may leak from the attic into lower levels of your home.
An attic vent is a simple solution that will prevent hot air from accumulating in your attic while also improving your home’s air circulation in the process.
