How often do you typically get your air ducts cleaned?
Air ducts are an important part of all centralized heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems. Your HVAC system will draw unconditioned air through the ducts. After cooling or warming it, your HVAC system will then release the conditioned air through the ducts.
Air ducts, however, will accumulate dust and dirt. As air travels through them, they’ll become dirty.
If you notice any of the following signs, you should consider scheduling an appointment with an HVAC technician to get your air ducts cleaned.
Dusty Vents
If your vents are covered in a thick layer of duct, you may need to get your air ducts cleaned.
Dusty vents is a sign that your air ducts need cleaning. When dust settles inside of your air ducts, it won’t necessarily stay there. Some of the dust will make its way out of your air ducts where it sticks to the supply vents.
Your HVAC system will release the conditioned air through the ducts and into your home’s living spaces via the supply vents.
Dusty supply vents is indicative of dirty air ducts. It means there’s an excessive amount of dust, as well as other debris, inside of your air ducts.
Musty Odors
Perhaps the most telltale sign that your air ducts need cleaning is the presence of musty odors.
If your home smells damp or otherwise musty, you may want to get your air ducts cleaned.
Dirty air ducts can cause musty odors by encouraging mold growth. Mold, of course, requires food to grow. Dust typically consists of organic matter, making it a common food source for mold. As mold begins to spread inside of your air ducts, it can lead to musty odors.
Restricted Airflow
Restricted airflow may indicate that your air ducts are overdue for a professional cleaning service.
Airflow refers to the ease or speed at which air travels through your air ducts. When using either the furnace or air conditioner – or a heat pump – air must travel through the ducts. If your air ducts are dirty, airflow will be restricted.
Dirty air vents will restrict airflow by creating blockages.
Large chunks of dust and dirt will create a blockage. Some of the air may be able to pass around the blockage, but it will do so more slowly. The end result is restricted airflow and poorer HVAC performance.
