How Can I Troubleshoot Air Conditioning Problems On My Own?

September 20, 2023 by Mike McFadden - A/C & Heating Specialist

Summers in Texas can be unbearably hot, and the last thing you want is to find out that your air conditioning system is acting up. While a broken AC unit is certainly a cause for concern, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can take before reaching out to a professional. In this guide, we’ll walk you through some basic checks you can perform yourself to identify the issue with your AC system.

A Word of Caution: While DIY is great, please remember that air conditioning systems are complex and can be dangerous if mishandled. For any tasks that you’re unsure about, don’t hesitate to reach out to us to ensure your safety and the integrity of your system.

DIY - Do it Yourself

Step 1: Check the Thermostat

Before you panic, have you checked if your thermostat is set correctly? Ensure it’s set to “Cool” and that the temperature is lower than the current room temperature. If you have a programmable thermostat, double-check that the settings are as you intend.

Step 2: Inspect the Air Filters

A common issue that affects AC efficiency is clogged air filters. If the filters are dirty, your system will have to work extra hard, causing wear and tear over time. Consider replacing or cleaning the filters if they appear to be obstructed.

Step 3: Assess the Circuit Breakers

Believe it or not, sometimes the solution is as simple as flipping a switch. If your AC unit is not turning on at all, the circuit breaker may have tripped. Locate your circuit breaker panel and look for any switches in the “off” position. Flip them back on and see if this resolves the issue.

Step 4: Check for Obstructions

Obstructions in your outdoor unit can lead to inefficiency and even system breakdown. Make sure there’s nothing blocking the airflow around the unit, like tall grass, leaves, or other debris. Also, inspect the indoor vents to ensure they’re not blocked by furniture or curtains.

Step 5: Inspect the Drain Pan and Condensate Line

A clogged condensate line can cause water to back up into your system, leading to malfunctions. If you notice water pooling around your indoor unit, this could be the culprit. Although clearing a condensate line can be a bit more complicated, it’s crucial for maintaining a healthy system.

When to Call an Expert

Sometimes the problem may be beyond a simple DIY fix. If you’ve run through these checks and still experience issues—or if you’re simply not comfortable performing these steps on your own—it’s time to consult a professional. The benefit of hiring an expert is the assurance that your system will be diagnosed and repaired properly, ultimately saving you time and money in the long run.

In the Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Leander, and Liberty Hill areas, we’re always here to help with your air conditioning needs. Keeping your home comfortable and your system running efficiently is our top priority.

If you’re in doubt, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Let the professionals handle the complexities so you can go back to enjoying your cool, comfortable home.
