Does your AC system have a noisy compressor? As it compresses the hot refrigerant in your AC system, the compressor will make noise, but some compressors are noisier than others.
If you’re tired of dealing with a noisy compressor, you might consider the following solutions to make it quieter.
Use a Compressor Blanket
There are blankets available to dampen the sound of AC system compressors without impairing their ability to compress the refrigerant. Known as compressor blankets, they can make your compressor quieter.
Research shows that a compressor blanket can reduce the sound of a compressor by 30% to 65%.
Upgrade to a Variable-Speed Compressor
If you’re currently using a single-speed compressor, you may want to upgrade to a variable-speed compressor. Variable-speed compressors perform the same task of compressing refrigerant as their single-speed counterparts.
The difference is that single-speed compressors operate at a single, full speed all the time. Variable-speed compressors can change their operational speed. Not only are they more efficient, but variable-speed compressors are typically quieter.
Check for a Refrigerant Leak
You may want to check your AC system for a refrigerant leak if the compressor is noisy. Some noise is to be expected when running your AC system.
A whistling or screaming noise could be a sign of a refrigerant leak. As refrigerant leaks out of your AC system, the compressor may make a whistling or screaming noise.
Plant Shrubs Nearby
Another tip to make your compressor quieter is to plant shrubs nearby. The compressor is found inside of the condenser unit. And the condenser unit is installed outside of your home.
You should still keep it free of obstruction, however, planting a few shrubs near the condenser unit will dampen the noise of your compressor.
Add Oil
Your compressor may need a little more oil. Most compressors come with lubricating oil. Over time, this oil can burn up and evaporate. As the oil level in your compressor drops, you may hear more noise originating from this AC component.
Keep in mind that checking for refrigerant leaks and adding oils are tasks that should be handled by a professional. If you’re dealing with a noisy compressor, you may want to contact a heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) company for an inspection.
