With summer coming to an end, you should use this opportunity to ensure that your heating, ventilation and cooling system (HVAC) is ready for the fall season.
Fall is a unique time of year because of its mild temperatures. Depending on where you live, you may find yourself using both the AC and heat.
By preparing your HVAC system ahead of time, you can rest assured knowing that it will keep you and your family comfortable throughout the fall season and beyond.
Remove Leaves and Debris Around Condenser Coil
Cleaning up your condenser coil can prepare your HVAC system for the fall season.
Unlike evaporator coils, condenser coils are located outside. Therefore, they tend to accumulate leaves and debris. This is particularly common during the fall season when deciduous leaves shed their leaves.
Cleaning your condenser coil will improve the performance and efficiency of your HVAC system while also protecting it from premature wear and tear.
Test the Heat
If you haven’t done so already, you should test your HVAC system’s heat. Whether it uses a furnace, boiler or heat pump, you may discover that the heat isn’t performing to its fullest potential.
There’s nothing worse than turning on your HVAC system’s heat for the first time of the year on a chilly fall night, only for it to blow room-temperature air. Sometimes, all it takes is a brief period of running to warm back up.
If the heat still doesn’t work, you should contact an HVAC professional for assistance.
Inspect Weatherstripping
Another tip to prepare your HVAC system for the fall season is to inspect weatherstripping.
Weatherstripping is typically found around doors and windows. As you may know, it’s used to seal points of entry into your home.
Weatherstripping, however, may degrade during the summer heat. As it dries up and cracks open, it may allow heated or cooled air to leak out of your home.
If you find any worn or damaged weatherstripping, you should replace it.
Replace the Air Filter
You should also consider replacing your HVAC system’s air filter to prepare it for the fall season.
As the weather gets cooler, you’ll probably spend more time inside your home. A dirty air filter means you’ll be exposed to more airborne pollutants, including dust, dander, mold and bacteria.
Thankfully, replacing a dirty air filter is a quick and easy process that nearly all homeowners can do themselves.
