Heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems are available in different types. The two most common types include split and packaged.
Both split HVAC systems and packaged HVAC systems can cool your home during the summer and warm your home during the winter.
With that said, split HVAC systems and packaged HVAC systems aren’t the same.
What Is a Split HVAC System?
A split HVAC system is a traditional climate control system that consists of an indoor unit as well as an outdoor unit.
The indoor unit is compromised of several parts, including an air handler, furnace (or heat exchanger) and an evaporator coil. The outdoor unit, on the other hand, consists of a large cabinet-like box that houses a compressor and condenser coil.
What Is a Packaged HVAC System?
A packaged HVAC system is an alternative climate control system that consists of a single unit.
It features all of the same basic parts as a split HVAC system. Packaged HVAC systems have a blower, furnace, evaporator coil, condenser coil. These parts, however, aren’t separated into two units.
In a packaged HVAC system, all the parts are located inside of a single unit.
Packaged HVAC systems are typically installed in the same areas as the outdoor unit of a split HVAC system. You can usually find them around the exterior of homes. In some cases, they may be installed on the roof or a home or building.
Packaged HVAC systems support roof installations. Therefore, they are often used for commercial properties.
Why a Split HVAC System Is the Better Choice
When given the option of a split HVAC system or a packaged HVAC system, you should typically choose the former.
Split HVAC systems offer a superior level of performance compared to their packaged counterparts. They typically create cooler air and warmer air, resulting in better climate control.
Energy efficiency is another reason to choose a split HVAC system.
Split HVAC systems are more efficient than packaged HVAC systems. They can cool and warm your home while consuming less energy. If you’re tired of overpaying for energy, a split HVAC system is the way to go.
Split HVAC systems usually last longer than packaged HVAC systems as well. With a split HVAC system, the air handler and evaporator coil will be inside your home. Therefore, these parts won’t be exposed to the elements.
