The Rise of Scroll Compressors in AC Systems

Located in the condenser unit, the compressor’s job is to pressurize the gaseous refrigerant so that it can release more heat. While all compressors are designed to perform this task, scroll compressors have become increasingly popular for some very good reasons.

What Is a Scroll Compressor?

A scroll compressor is a type of AC system compressor that features a spiral, scroll-shaped design.

Also known as a spiral compressor, a scroll compressor has two scroll-shaped parts. One of these parts is stationary. The other part will move during use.

As refrigerant runs through it, the moving scroll-shaped part will rotate around the stationary scroll-shaped part. This rotation will compress the gaseous refrigerant, thus raising its pressure.

By raising the pressure of the refrigerant, scroll compressors allow AC systems to create cool air. The refrigerant will release its heat when properly pressurized.

Benefits of Scroll Compressors

AC systems with a scroll compressor are typically quieter than those with a reciprocating compressor.

Reciprocating compressors feature a piston. The piston will move or “reciprocate” up and down while simultaneously compressing the refrigerant.

As the piston within a reciprocating compressor moves, though, it will produce noise. Scroll compressors aren’t necessarily silent, but they are significantly quieter than reciprocating compressors.

Another benefit of scroll compressors is longevity. They contain fewer moving parts than reciprocating compressors. And with fewer moving parts, they typically last longer.

If you’re tired of constantly repairing or replacing the compressor in your AC system, you may want to switch to a scroll compressor.

One of the greatest benefits of scroll compressors is efficiency.  Scroll compressors can be as much as 10 to 15% more efficient than reciprocating compressors.

Even if you have a heat pump, you can still benefit from a scroll compressor. Both AC systems and heat pumps support scroll compressors.
