Space heaters offer a fast and effective way to warm individual rooms in your home without relying on a furnace or heat pump.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), however, space heaters are responsible for roughly one in three of all house fires that occur during the winter.
If you’re going to use a space heater this winter, you should follow these tips to lower the risk of a house fire.
#1) Don’t Leave Unattended
Never leave your space heater unattended.
It only takes a few seconds for a space heater to malfunction and spark a fire. If no one is around when this occurs, the fire may spread and engulf your home.
Whether you’re leaving for work, visiting another family member’s room or preparing to go to sleep, don’t leave your space heater unattended.
#2) Create 3 Feet of Clearance
A good rule of thumb to follow when using a space heater is to create at least 3 feet of clearance.
In other words, there should be at least 3 feet between the front of your space heater and any objects, furniture or structures.
#3) Place on a Flat and Level Surface
Another important safety tip is to place your space heater on a flat and level surface.
When placed on an uneven or unlevel surface, it may fall over. And if your space heater falls over while it’s running, it may spark a fire.
#4) Plug Directly Into a Wall Outlet
Avoid the temptation of using an extension cord and, instead, plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet.
Some extension cords are rated to handle space heaters, but many are not.
Of course, it’s best to err on the side of caution by avoiding the use of extension cords with your space heater altogether.
#5) Unplug When Not in Use
When you aren’t using your space heater, unplug it from the wall outlet.
Normally, a space heater won’t draw power unless it’s turned on. If your space heater malfunctions, though, it may continue to draw power if it’s plugged into a wall outlet.
#6) Inspect Regularly
Try to get into the habit of regularly inspecting your space heater for signs of damage or failure.
When you unplug it, check the prongs for melted plastic. When a space heater overheats, it may melt plastic from the electrical cord onto the prongs, in which case you should stop using it.
